A diffuse sensor needs nothing on the far side at all. It emits light and measures what scatters back off the target itself, so you mount a single unit and you are done — the simplest photoelectric installation available.
How diffuse sensing differs
Through-beam and retro-reflective sensors detect an interruption; diffuse sensors detect a return. The output switches when enough light comes back from the object in front of the lens. That inverts the usual logic and brings one important consequence: the sensing distance depends on how reflective the target is.
A white carton returns far more light than a matt black rubber part, so the same sensor will see the carton much further away. Always set sensitivity against the least reflective product that will run on the line, and confirm the background does not itself trigger the sensor.

Why does my diffuse sensor miss dark objects?
Because a dark, matt surface returns very little light. Reduce the working distance, raise the sensitivity, or switch to a retro-reflective or through-beam arrangement, which detect an interruption and are indifferent to target colour.
The sensor keeps triggering on the machine frame behind the product. What do I do?
That is background interference. Move the sensor closer to the product, reduce the sensitivity so the further background falls below threshold, or fit a background-suppression type. Painting the background matt black also helps as a low-cost fix.
