Photoelectric Sensors

Through-beam, retro-reflective, diffuse, fork and laser optical sensors for ranges from 30 mm to 30 m.

Photoelectric sensors detect objects using light. They reach far beyond the few millimetres an inductive or capacitive sensor manages, and they detect any opaque object regardless of what it is made of — which makes them the standard choice on conveyors, packaging lines and material handling systems.

We supply through-beam, retro-reflective, diffuse, fork and laser fork types, plus a 230 V AC photo control unit with relay output for machines with no PLC.

Laser Fork Sensor

The laser fork sensor works on the same through-beam principle as the standard fork type, but replaces the LED emitter with a laser diode. The result is a much…

Ordering options

Every product in this category can be adjusted to your application. Specify any of the following at enquiry and we will quote against it:

  • Output configuration — PNP or NPN, normally open or normally closed.
  • Cable length — 2 m standard, longer lengths on request.
  • Termination — flying lead or M12 plug-in connector.
  • Housing — chrome-plated brass, stainless steel, or rectangular block.
  • Mounting — shielded (flush) or unshielded (non-flush).
  • Supply voltage — 10–30 V DC or 230 V AC where applicable.

Frequently asked questions

Which photoelectric type should I choose?

Through beam for the longest range and greatest tolerance to dust. Retro-reflective when you can only wire one side. Diffuse for close range where nothing can be mounted opposite. Fork or laser fork for small targets like labels and perforations, where no alignment is the priority.

Will a photoelectric sensor detect a clear PET bottle?

Not reliably with standard types, because light passes straight through. Use a capacitive sensor to detect the liquid content, or ask us about a clear-object detection arrangement for your specific container.

How do I stop dust causing false readings?

Choose through beam. It has the highest excess gain of any photoelectric type, so a great deal of lens contamination can build up before detection is affected. Retro-reflective is next best; diffuse is the most sensitive to dirt.
