Rectangular-block proximity sensors solve the problem a threaded barrel cannot: mounting where there is no room to drill a through-hole and fit two lock-nuts. The flat body bolts to a bracket or machine face, and the broad sensing face gives a wider, more forgiving detection area.
Where block housings win
A barrel sensor needs axial depth behind the mounting plate for the body and nuts. A rectangular sensor mounts from the front with two screws, so it fits flat against a guard, a slide or the side of a frame member. It is also easier to align repeatably — the flat face and screw holes fix the orientation, so a replacement sits exactly where the old one did.
