A control unit sits between your sensors and the machine, converting a low-power sensor signal into a relay output that can switch a contactor, solenoid or alarm directly. It is what lets you build a working control scheme without a PLC.
What a control unit does
Sensors produce small switching signals designed to drive a PLC input, not a load. A control unit takes that signal, provides the sensor's supply, and gives you volt-free relay contacts on the output — enough to drive the actual machine hardware.
On simple machines this replaces a PLC entirely. On larger installations it is used to give local, hard-wired control of an individual function that must keep working independently of the main control system.
